Need to Get Back on the Road in Ohio? Understanding SR-22 Requirements

A smiling woman in a carEver felt stuck in a bureaucratic rut? If you’ve had your driver’s license suspended in Ohio, you might be feeling that way right now. One of the hurdles you may face on the road to getting your license reinstated is the SR-22 requirement. But fear not, fellow Buckeye driver! This blog post will explain what an SR-22 is, why you might need one, and how it can help you get back on the road.

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22, sometimes called a certificate of financial responsibility, isn’t actually car insurance itself. It’s a filing made by your insurance company to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) that says you have the minimum required car insurance coverage. In Ohio, that means at least $25,000 for bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 total for bodily injury liability per accident, and $25,000 for property damage liability per accident.

Why Would I Need an SR-22?

The BMV might require you to file an SR-22 if you’ve been deemed a high-risk driver due to certain violations. Some common reasons include:

A DUI or OVI (Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence) conviction

  • Driving without insurance
  • Racking up too many points on your license
  • By filing an SR-22, you’re essentially showing the BMV that you’re taking responsibility and are committed to maintaining car insurance coverage. This proves you’re a lower risk and allows the BMV to reinstate your driving privileges.

How Long Does an SR-22 Last?

The length of time you need to maintain an SR-22 filing depends on the reason for your suspension. The BMV typically requires it for three years from the date your suspension began.

Getting Back on the Road

An SR-22 can be a necessary step to get your driving privileges back in Ohio. While it’s not car insurance itself, it demonstrates to the state that you’re meeting the minimum insurance requirements. By understanding what an SR-22 is and why you might need one, you can navigate the process of getting back on the road a little smoother.
